Transnational Currents of US-China Relations

November 15-17, 2013
The University of Hong Kong, Centennial Campus

This year’s conference marked the most successful one to date, with over 110 abstracts submitted on the theme “Transnational Currents of US-China Relations.”  Sixty-four universities were represented from all over the world, with 35 universities from mainland China. James Fallows, National Correspondent for The Atlantic; Marilyn Lake, Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow in History at the University of Melbourne; and Shelley Fisher-Fishkin, Professor of English and Director of American Studies at Stanford University, headlined the conference. A total of 23 concurrent panels were featured, with diverse topics ranging from transnational literary views, to comparisons of US and Chinese media coverage, to Chinese cultural stereotypes and much more. See files below to view a full list of the panels.

This year, there were more papers related to culture and the social sciences, indicating an increased focus on the importance of cultural and social dynamics in the study of America and China, in addition to the political, economic, and strategic disciplines of US-China relations.

USCET took this opportunity to reflect on the past 10 years of American Studies in China and discuss the future of the discipline in a special plenary session, chaired by USCET President Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch. Ten representatives, each from the universities that have hosted the ASN conferences in the past, comprised a Special Delegation that commented on the experience of American Studies scholars in China and the trajectory of the field.

USCET would like to congratulate Iris Eu of the College of William and Mary, Linguang Qiu, and Huihua Liu, both of Beijing Foreign Studies University, the winners of the 2013 Top Graduate Student Paper awards.

The relationship between China and the United States has never been just a bilateral affair. The tenth anniversary conference of the American Studies Network explores US-China relations for the broader international contexts of Asia, the Pacific and the globe. During more than two centuries of interaction between the two countries, American and Chinese identities and relations have been shifting and changing in ways that trouble any easy distinctions between East and West. Furthermore, the commercial, cultural, diplomatic, political, intellectual, literary, and religious dimensions of American-Chinese interactions have impacted many other cultures and influenced our understandings of the regional and hemispheric categories of Asia and the Pacific. As the legacies of diasporic migrations between the two countries continue to this day, do cultural identities exceed any one national orientation or even challenge the category of nationalism itself? How have the politics in the US, China, and other Asia Pacific nations evolved in response to the increasing economic and social interdependence between the two countries? How have US-China relations changed in the age of globalization and how do these changes impact other Asian countries? By answering these questions, our aim is to assess the current state and broader context of American Studies in Greater China and other East and Southeast Asian countries. How far have we come during the first ten years of the American Studies Network, where do we need to go in the future?
