The Fourth Annual American Studies Network Conference

The United States After September 11: Changes and Continuities

October 19-21, 2007, Beijing Foreign Studies University

USCET, Beijing Foreign Studies University’s American Studies Center and the Institute for American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences jointly sponsored “The United States After September 11: Changes and Continuities”, an international conference held from October 19-21, 2007.

The theme of the conference is how the United States has changed since the terrorist attacks in 2001. More than five years on, it is now time to fully assess the ramifications the attacks have had on US social, political, economic and cultural landscapes and on foreign relations. It is hoped that such a conference will prove timely for the close examination of the continuities and changes that 9/11 has engendered.

Conference Themes:

  • National Security Strategy and Foreign Policy;
  • Anti-Americanism and US International Images;
  • The Changing Political Landscape;
  • Media and Government Interactions;
  • Economy and Trade;
  • The Changing Cultural Landscape;
  • Films and Literature on War;
  • 9/11 and History: Analogies and Comparisons.

The conference featured speakers from around the globe, offering their perspectives on the social and political changes that have occurred in the US since the World Trade towers fell.

Cambridge Scholars Publishing has worked with USCET and the University of Hong Kong to create a volume including a selection of papers from “The United States After September 11: Changes and Continuities”.

Find reviews of the many papers from the volume Perspectives from China on Nine-Eleven: Essays in Transnational American Studies edited by Priscilla Roberts, Mei Renyi, and Yan Xunhua in the link provided below. The reviews by Gray Kochhar-Lindgren of the University of Washington, Bothell and Lynn T. White III of Princeton University summarize and analyze the variety of papers selected in 2007.
